USB Pins Explained

Need a safe lower power supply? Hot-wire a usb cable! There are a number of different usb terminals.

And there’s no “universal” colouring of the wires. But normally it’s something like this:

# Name Color Description
1 VBUS Red or Orange +5V
2 D− White or Gold Data−
3 D+ Green Data+
4 GND Black or Blue Ground

For Mini/Micro-A and -B pinout then the 4th pin is the “ID” pin. It has no wire, and distinguishes cable ends:

  • “A” plug (host): connected to GND
  • “B” plug (device): not connected

(I don’t quite understand how this works but…) Pin 5 is then the ground pin.

Pump test

The pump has a red and a black cable.

Plugging in a micro B charger, holding it as oriented in the diagram, inserting the red cable to the left and the black to the right starts the motor running! :) Yay.
